South Wales Police also urged people to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.

In a statement posted on social media, The Hare & Hounds said: “There was a fire at the Hare & Hounds this morning. The most important thing is that everyone is safe, and we’re hugely grateful to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and everyone who helped.

“We’re still taking it all in and working out what comes next, so please bear with us. The Hare & Hounds has stood at the heart of this village for over 300 years, and with the support of this incredible community, it will again.

“Thank you for all the kind words and messages. We’ll share more when we can.”

Accreditation

The Hare & Hounds was ranked 96th in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list, which described the venue as serving “quality food and drinks in relaxed and informal surroundings”.

The 300-year-old pub is also a Michelin Bib Gourmand holder and is known for its seasonal food offer, with chef Tom Watts-Jones changing the menu regularly and using produce from the Vale of Glamorgan, as well as the pub’s own smallholding, kitchen garden and bakery.

The pub, which describes itself as a local watering hole that has served the village for more than 300 years, reopened in early 2015 after being taken over and renovated by chef Tom Watts-Jones and his wife Sarah.

The Hare & Hounds has since become a well-regarded Welsh dining pub, with a focus on local, seasonal food and drink.

Following the pub’s statement, customers and local residents shared messages of support online, with many expressing relief that everyone was safe and pledging to support the business when it is able to reopen.
