Damm UK is launching an alcohol-free version of Old Speckled Hen, with the new beer set to roll out across Greene King pubs nationally and other venues.

Old Speckled Hen ZERO is a 0.0% ABV variant of the premium ale brand and marks the first major innovation since Damm acquired the Old Speckled Hen family of brands from Greene King earlier this year.

The beer has been developed in response to growing demand for no and low alcohol drinks, as well as the trend for “zebra striping”, where consumers alternate between full strength and alcohol-free options during the same occasion.

Damm said the new beer retained the brand’s malty flavour profile, with notes of caramel and fruit, while containing 12 calories per 100ml.

Moderation trend

The brewer cited BBPA figures showing 2025 was a record year for no and low alcohol beer, with 200m pints sold, accounting for almost 3% of the UK beer market.

It also pointed to Drinkaware Monitor 2026 research, which found a record 91% of drinkers were moderating their alcohol intake, up from 87% in 2025.

Damm UK managing director Luke White said: “We know that consumer drinking behaviour is now tailored around occasions and the launch of Old Speckled Hen ZERO reflects that.”

Whatever the reason for moderating, we believe that this 0.0% traditional ale is going to become a national favourite.

Brand investment

Old Speckled Hen ZERO will launch in 4x440ml can format in selected Morrisons stores and online, with cans and 500ml bottles due to roll out to Asda later this month.

The product will also be available across Greene King pubs nationally and other on trade venues.

Over time, Old Speckled Hen ZERO will replace the existing Old Speckled Hen Low Alcohol, which is 0.5% ABV.

Damm acquired the Old Speckled Hen brands as part of a wider move back into British beer and ale production at its Eagle Brewery in Bedford.

The launch follows Damm’s previous comments that it sees opportunities to attract younger drinkers into ale and cask, as the category looks to broaden its appeal.
