The numbers behind pubs’ community impact

Pubs with Purpose shows the business benefits of fundraising
Number crunching: we've highlighted the financial impact of pubs going above and beyond in the communities they serve (The Morning Advertiser)

Across the country, pubs provide meeting places, host sports teams, raise money for charities and create spaces where people can connect.

Increasingly, research is putting a financial value on that contribution.

We’ve highlighted some of the figures illustrating just how pubs support those they serve:

£30bn

According to the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA)’s report Pubs as Social Infrastructure, published in July this year, with almost 30% of UK adults visiting pubs regularly (equating to about 16m people), the total wellbeing-equivalent value is estimated at up to £30bn a year.

£100m

Non-profit organisation PubAid revealed pubs collectively contribute more than £100m to charity each year

£40m

Pubs provide £40m annually to grassroots and community sports, estimations from PubAid show.

The research also found pubs help keep 1.7m people active each year.

£1.3m

A report commissioned by Punch Pubs in partnership with Northumbria University earlier this year (April) found the average UK pub contributes up to £1.3m in economic and social value to its local community.

£12,000

Government methodology used in the BBPA’s Pubs as Social Infrastructure report put the wellbeing loss associated with severe loneliness at about £12,000 per person, pinpointing the potential value of social spaces such as pubs that help prevent isolation.

£2,000

The BBPA’s report also estimated the wellbeing benefit generated through pub-based social interaction at up to £2,000 per regular guest a year, using the Treasury’s WELLBY methodology.

£8.28

Just last year, not-for-profit organisation Pub is The Hub unveiled research that showed for every £1 spent investing in the provision of services and activities in the pub, an average of £8.28 of social value is created, highlighting the wider return pubs can deliver for their communities.
