North sells original brewery
North started brewing at the Taverner’s Walk site in 2015 and has now moved all its beer production to Springwell – its 21,000sq ft brewery and taproom in the city.
The business recently announced it is expanding outside of Yorkshire with new taprooms in Birmingham and Manchester alongside plans to grow further.
Tartarus Beers was founded by Jack Roberts and Jordan Orpen in 2020 with the view to produce a range of high-quality craft beers.
The brewer has a focus on creating Imperial and European beers alongside producing a wide range of styles including lagers, saisons and stouts.
The acquisition of North’s Taverner’s Walk site means Tartarus will be able to increase production and launch its barrel-ageing programme.
Flourishing beer scene
It will be opening a new on-site taproom, aiming to showcase its varied beer offer and next year will see it host tap takeovers, events and food vendors, looking to place the taproom on the map as a great drinking venue in Leeds.
North co-founder and director John Gyngell said: “It’s brilliant to see our original home at Taverner’s Walk in such exciting hands.
“The beer scene in Leeds has flourished over the past 10 years, with an incredible group of breweries operating in the city.
“Opening Springwell has increased our brewing capacity, enabling us to pass our original home on to the next generation of new brewers.
“We can’t wait to see what Tartarus create there.”
Tartarus Beers director and co-owner Jordan Orpen said the business was excited to have its own brewery and taproom.
Good fit
She added: “Finding the right location is difficult and we are very lucky John (Gyngell) and Christian (Townsley) thought of us as a good fit to take over where North Brewing Co started.
“Having our own brewery has allowed us to upscale production, bring packaging in-house and most importantly our serve our beers in our very own taproom.
“It has also given us the capacity to move forward with a barrel project, which is something we have wanted to do for a while, look out for our first barrel-aged beer coming soon.”
Orpen went on to say she was looking forward to calling Taverner’s Walk the company’s home.
“Thanks again to all the team at North for supporting us through all of this, you guys are ace,” she said.
