Making your beer garden more wildlife friendly, increasing sustainability across your food and drink offer and the journey of installing solar panels are just some of the topics we have addressed as part of the Green Initiative so far.

The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA)’s managing director Juliane Caillouette Noble revealed how local sourcing can help businesses alongside how to balance local with quality.

In a special podcast episode, we heard from a number of experts around how to implement sustainability schemes into their operations.

The Riverside at Aymestrey in Herefordshire took home the title of Best Sustainable Pub at the 2022 Great British Pub Awards after it wowed the judges with initiatives such as growing its own produce, offering nature walks to guests, championing local food and drink as well as running a fundraising initiative to support local sustainability projects.

Chef-patron Andy Link outlined why the pub puts sustainability at its heart and how its customers and staff are all part of the journey.

Wide range

Furthermore, the British Institute of Innkeeping chief executive Steve Alton highlighted the organisation’s new Sustainability Champion Award and explained how he sees the sector doing when it comes to be environmentally friendly.

Zero Carbon Forum founder and CEO Mark Chapman also advised how operators can best reduce their carbon footprint.

Elsewhere, foraging, using whole animals and utilising local suppliers were just three of the ways suggested to integrate sustainability on food and drink menus.

Looking outside of the food and drink offer, we have also showcased top tips on encouraging wildlife into beer gardens.

Top tips

These included keeping an area wild and letting the garden grow on its own to provide a nectar source for bees, creating ready-made homes for wildlife and ensuring a water source to keep a variety of creatures hydrated in warmer months.

In the midst of this, we also produced a webinar where leading voices from across the sector had their say on sustainability.

You can still watch the webinar, on demand and for free here to find out how to boost green credentials and your bottom line.

Most recently, we spoke with operators around the practicalities of installing solar panels who revealed the benefits and the challenges of implementing a different power source.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to look at sustainability from a plethora of aspects to help businesses implement more environmentally practices.
