Bakery chain Greggs is set to open its first pub in department store Fenwick Newcastle this month (Saturday 27 September).

The Golden Flake Tavern will be open daily from 11am until 7pm and will be serving Greggs-inspired beers on draught.

This will include the Pink Jammie IPA and Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager, which have been brewed by Newcastle-based Full Circle Brew Co as well as Guinness and Menabrea.

Alongside beer, the pub will also offer cocktails such as the Pink Jammie Fizz and Spiced Caramel Doughnut Old Fashioned.

Furthermore, The 96 Mule cocktail will be available for visitors to the pub, a drink that has been created in honour of the sausage roll’s 96 layers of pastry.

Alongside drinks, its food offer will focus on typical pub classics with a Greggs twist including a carvery on a Sunday, which guests will be able to choose from three ‘centrepieces’ of the roast – Steak Bake, Chicken Bake or a Cheese & Onion Bake.

Menu options

Dishes will include a Chicken Bake Parmo, a Ploughman’s Platter, Steak Bake Mixed Grill and Mac & Cheese Bites.

Meanwhile, desserts such as a Pink Jammie Trifle and Yum Yum Bread & Butter Pudding will be available for sweet-toothed guests at the Golden Flake Tavern.

Its design aims to evoke nostalgia and community, featuring a mahogany bar and booth seating as well as locally commissioned artwork. A variety of board games will be kept in a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ for pubgoers to enjoy.

While the Golden Flake Tavern is only set to be open until mid-February, the pub will be hosting a weekly quiz night on Tuesdays from 7 October.

This is the latest collaboration between Greggs and department store Fenwick, following on from Bistro Greggs in December 2023 and the Greggs Champagne Bar in 2024, which saw 8,000 guests taste a sausage roll paired with a glass of Champagne during the nine-week experience.

Landmark venture

Greggs customer director Hannah Squirrell said: “Following the reaction and success of our previous collaborations with Fenwick – Bistro by Greggs in 2023 and Greggs Champaign Bar last year – we’re thrilled to be launching our third landmark venture together.

“The Golden Flake Tavern brings a fresh twist to the traditional pub experience and we hope everyone who joined us before, along with many new faces, will come along to enjoy this unique Greggs experience.”

This latest collaboration celebrates the best of both brands, according to Fenwick strategic partnerships director Leo Fenwick.

He added: “As two north-east icons, we’re proud to work together again in offering customers something playful, surprising and truly unique in the heart of Newcastle.”

This isn’t the first time a business outside of the pub sector has opened a venue in the on-trade.

In 2023, Tesco took over the Castle pub in Farringdon, central London for two days to celebrate the King’s coronation.

Last October, car booking app Uber opened a London venue, which it claimed was the capital’s ‘first carbon-negative pub’.

The 55 Tonnes in Westminster opened for three days and featured a range of carbon-saving technologies.
