Speaking at the recent MA Leaders Club conference in Glasgow, Ask for Angela CEO Sylvia Oates highlighted the sector’s often under-recognised contribution to public safety.

She said hospitality businesses were “front line” in the night-time economy, with teams often intervening to protect vulnerable customers and support community wellbeing.

Oates went onto stress the initiative’s effectiveness depended on staff training and confidence.

“A poster on the toilet door isn’t enough. If someone asks for Angela, they’re putting their trust in you - teams need to know exactly how to respond,” she said.

Key partner

The scheme boss also positioned hospitality as a key partner in tackling wider safety challenges, from violence against women to high street regeneration, arguing collaboration with bodies such as the Government, police and local authorities was essential.

She added: “It’s not about ‘us and them’. Operators are part of the solution and their insight is invaluable in shaping policies that actually work on the ground.”

Furthermore, she urged businesses to sign up to the Ask for Angela pledge and share best practice.

“The industry is already doing so much. We just need to make sure it’s supported, recognised and consistently delivered,” she added.

Scheme’s new look

By signing the pledge, organisations publicly demonstrate their commitment to safer spaces and gain access to official branding.

March this year saw Ask for Angela relaunch with a new brand and unveil its Official Pledge, calling on hospitality venues to support its scheme.

At the time, it was praised by Dawn Butler, MP for Brent and East who said: “Ask for Angela has become a vital tool in keeping people safe in public spaces.

“The launch of this Official Pledge strengthens accountability and empowers venues to play an active role in protecting their communities.

“It’s encouraging to see safety initiatives like this continuing to grow, adapt and lead.”
