Stonegate recorded its biggest midweek night of the World Cup so far as England beat DR Congo 2-1.

The UK’s largest pub company said fans bought 802,000 drinks across its 656 Craft Union pubs and 332 managed venues, 438,000 more than a typical Wednesday.

Draught beer accounted for 443,000 pints, with Cruzcampo narrowly ahead of Birra Moretti as the top seller.

The figures come as The Morning Advertiser’s (MA) Beer Report 2026 highlights the continued importance of major sporting occasions in driving draught beer sales across the on-trade.

The group also sold 30,000 dishes on the night, with fries the most popular menu item.

Bookings surge

Stonegate said Minories in London was its busiest pub on the night, selling 5,000 drinks, including 3,500 pints.

The venue was also recorded as one of the loudest pubs in Stonegate and Heineken’s Roar of the Nation barometer, after Harry Kane’s 75th minute goal sparked cheers of 133.1 decibels.

Stonegate said this was louder than the loudest recorded rock concert and comparable to a jet taking off.

The match has added to strong demand across the tournament, with 113,000 guests booked into Stonegate pubs for World Cup fixtures so far.

That figure is closing in on the 140,000 guests booked across the whole of the Euros, with more than two weeks of the World Cup still to play.

Stonegate said 10,000 bookings had already been made for England’s next fixture against Mexico.

The group said 610 Craft Union pubs, 182 managed venues and hundreds of leased and tenanted sites would open late under licence, with Temporary Event Notices secured to allow venues to trade until the final whistle.

Stonegate CEO David McDowall said: “Nights like this are exactly why we do what we do. Pubs full, communities together and the whole country roaring for the nation.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming guests to support and cheer on the Three Lions when England takes on Mexico. Our teams are ready to open late into the early hours of Monday and welcome fans through the door on Sunday night, whether they’ve booked ahead or are just walking in.”

Hearing warning

Separate decibel monitoring from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) and Specsavers also found England celebrations reached noise levels capable of affecting long-term hearing health.

The research, part of the NTIA’s Listen For Life campaign, found crowd noise peaked at 135 decibels in Birmingham during Kane’s second goal.

Manchester reached 131 decibels, while London’s Garden Vauxhall recorded 127 decibels.
