Ongoing investigation

Police said no life threatening or life changing injuries were reported, and an investigation is ongoing.

Fire crews from Grays and Rayleigh Weir also attended the scene. Local reports said one person was initially trapped but was able to free themselves, while two people were handed over to the ambulance service for treatment.

Despite damage to the pub’s frontage, the Anchor Inn said it was “business as usual” and confirmed it would remain open for the England fixture.

In a post on social media, the pub said: “Thank you to everyone who messaged and came to help yesterday. We are still open for the football later, come on England.”

Landlord Hayley Sewell told the BBC the crash had caused a “nuisance” to the business, but the team had managed to board up the damage and keep trading.

She said: “We wanted to remain open for the Benfleet community, who have given us so much.”

Castle Point MP Rebecca Harris also commented on the incident, saying she was sorry to hear about the crash at the historic pub but understood there were no serious injuries.

She added: “Amazingly, the pub is still open this evening and I understand will be again tomorrow for the England game.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information or footage to contact Essex Police, quoting incident 1130 of 14 July.
