Common Table Group and associated companies have announced plans to acquire 57 former Whitbread restaurant sites and one Premier Inn hotel for an undisclosed sum.

The hospitality business said the deal would create 700 new jobs, in addition to team members transferring from Whitbread.

The first sites are expected to relaunch from mid-November, with Common Table Group aiming to get all venues fully trading again “as soon as possible”.

The move follows Whitbread’s decision to exit its UK branded restaurant estate, with the company previously confirming the closure of its remaining Beefeater, Brewers Fayre and Table Table restaurants in September.

Mitchells & Butlers also agreed to acquire a small package of former Whitbread sites earlier this year.

The deal follows other transactions involving former Whitbread sites, including the conditional sale of 53 branded restaurant sites to Queensway Inns, which are expected to be operated as going concerns.

All-day offer

Common Table Group said it would invest in refurbishing the restaurants, developing staff and creating new menus.

The sites will remain restaurants, with an all-day food and drink menu aimed at hotel guests and local customers.

They will also include a new speciality barista coffee offer from sister company Rodeo Group.

Common Table Group managing director Thomas Anderson said: “Our priority is to get the sites back open and trading as soon as possible.

We’re building an entrepreneurial business with a local feel, where our teams are empowered to make decisions and shape each venue around the people and communities it serves.

He added: “We’re excited about what we can create together and look forward to bringing new energy and ideas to our guests.”

Recruitment drive

The company said each restaurant would be run “with the spirit of an independent”, with teams encouraged to shape venues around their local communities.

Common Table Group will recruit for new roles including general managers, and said vacancies would be advertised through its website.

Anderson’s experience includes running restaurants and leading Rodeo Group, a speciality coffee and bakery business with 15 Rodeo Doughnut sites in London and Manchester.

Common Table Group is supported by Rove360, a hospitality transformation consultancy whose team includes former Whitbread senior managers.
