The investment will create between 25 and 30 jobs, with an opening targeted for early December.
Located close to St James’ Park, the venue will feature a new audio and visual system for live sport, a dedicated live music stage, pool table, three darts areas and a soundproofed karaoke suite accommodating up to 20 guests. The karaoke suite will also operate as a private hire space with its own bar and toilet facilities.
‘Right opportunity’
Experienced operators David and Donna Molloy have been appointed to run the venue under Amber Taverns’ operator-managed model.
Amber Taverns business development manager Alex Ozobia said: “Newcastle city centre has been a priority location for us for some considerable time, but we’ve been determined to find the right opportunity.
“In the Gander, we have secured a fantastic site in a prime position, experienced operators who share our vision and the opportunity to create something really special.”
Ozobia added: “Our £3 million commitment reflects our confidence in Newcastle’s hospitality market and our commitment to acquiring and transforming well-located sites that offer genuine potential.”
400 site target
The acquisition follows a series of investments by Amber Taverns, including a seven-figure investment in Cooper & Co in Salisbury, its first Wiltshire pub, and a six-figure refurbishment of the Thistle in Alloa, which created 15 jobs.
The investment also comes as Amber Taverns targets further expansion towards a potential 400-site estate.
Chief executive Richard Lewis told The Morning Advertiser (MA) last week that the group could more than double its estate over the coming years, with its 200th pub expected to open in January and at least 15 sites planned for 2027.
Lewis said the business would continue focusing on its established drinks-led, sport and entertainment model, with investment directed towards new openings and improving its existing estate.
The Gander is expected to open in time for the festive trading period, further strengthening Amber Taverns’ presence in the North East.
