Robert Breare is to receive £4.5m from HBOS, the Scottish bank, in a rescue refinancing of his Noble House Pub Company. The deal comes after another of his backers, Hermes, the influential pension fund, refused to invest any more money in the business. It is believed to have lost more than £15m. The Sunday Times

Gamblers are to be given the chance to win unlimited prizes on fruit machines, opening the way for American-style £1m jackpots in casinos. Tessa Jowell, the culture secretary, will announce on Monday that the government is to lift the prize limit of £1,000 as part of a relaxation of gambling laws. The big jackpots will be restricted to machines in casinos, which are to be encouraged through more relaxed planning rules and the prospect of installing banks of gaming machines. The Sunday Times

Bill Shannon, the restaurant chief who missed out on the top job at Whitbread, has walked away with a £750,000 pay-off. The deal, worth twice Shannon's annual salary, was signed just before the leisure group became the latest company to cut the duration of directors service contracts from two years to 12 months. Film censors are considering new measures to protect children's health by clamping down on Hollywood scenes of drinking and smoking. In future, tobacco and alcohol could be included alongside sex and violence when the film board classifies new movies - a step which could ban children from watching films where heavy smoking is portrayed.
