England's friendly against Switzerland on Wednesday marks a lot of firsts. The side's first fixture of the year at Wembley. The first match under new manager Fabio Capello. And the first chance to redeem themselves since November's dismal loss to Croatia, which failed to earn England a place in Euro 2008.

Wednesday also marks the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash, in which 23 people lost their lives. The England players will don black armbands for the game, which kicks off at 8pm.

Switzerland didn't present too much of a problem the last time these two sides met, in a Euro 2004 group game in Portugal. Wayne Rooney struck home twice before Steven Gerrard sealed the win in the 82nd minute.

With a good track record against the Swiss - 12 wins out of 19 meetings - things look promising for what many people are predicting will be a new-look national side.

This year's rugby union Six Nations tournament kicks off on BBC1 on Saturday. The opening match sees Ireland - who had a disappointing World Cup last year - put to the test by the visiting Italians.

The Welsh have gone two decades without a win at the home of English rugby, but Saturday's visit to Twicken-ham provides a good chance of changing that statistic, with a number of factors hinting at a closer match than past statistics might suggest.

New Kiwi coach Warren Gatland has recalled Gavin Henson and installed new captain Ryan Jones. But while Wales are at full strength, the English squad is depleted.

Head coach Brian Ashton - who has lost the back-row expertise of retired World Cup winners Lawrence Dallaglio and Martin Corry - faces a tricky selection process, with question marks hanging over a number of his injured squad.

Scotland host the defending champions France on Sunday. Coverage from Murrayfield begins at 2.30pm.
