The Prince of Wales celebrated St David’s Day by getting to know the locals and pulling a pint at The Turf pub in Wrexham.

During the visit, which took place on Friday 1 March, His Royal Highness met licensee of The Turf Wayne Jones and his team.

The Prince also spoke with members of the community and representatives from local charities to hear about how the pub acts as a vital community hub and provides support for various local causes.

At the same time, the pubs’ licensee was awarded a Community Award from Admiral Taverns, which owns the Turf, to recognise all his hard work for the community by Wrexham FC's CEO, Fleur Robinson

Jones said: "It was a pleasure to welcome The Prince of Wales to The Turf to showcase the pub and all that it offers to the local community.

“I do hope he can pay us another visit in the future, and in the meantime I'd like to thank Admiral Taverns and Fleur for presenting me with such a fantastic award recognising our hard work.

“The Turf stands testament to the fact that pubs are so much more than just a place to drink, but vibrant social hubs that bring people together to support one another.”

The Turf gained notoriety in 2022 when it featured in the Disney+ documentary Welcome to Wrexham, which followed Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they became the new owners of Wrexham football club.

Following the documentary, in which viewers saw Jones befriended by the duo as they looked to learn about the community, the pub saw an upsurge of visitors, the operator told The Morning Advertiser in January last year.

During the visit, The Prince of Wales took the reigns behind the bar at The Turf and pulled a pint and had a drink with McElhenney, who also presented the future king with a Wrexham football club shirt, as reported in the BBC.

This comes as trade body UKHospitality Cymru recently urged the Welsh Government to raise its business rate relief from 40% to 75% using allocated funds from the UK Government in a bid to alleviate cost pressures faced by Welsh operators.
