A pub in the village where the Gunpowder Plot was hatched has re-opened following a half-a-million pound investment by new owners.

The Olde Coach House, in Ashby St Ledgers, near Daventry, was bought by Mercury Inns in a joint venture with Charles Wells.

The pub, which will be known as OCH, has been fitted with new kitchens, new entrance and a new patio area for al fresco dining.

Mark Butler, joint managing director of Tamworth-based Mercury Inns, said the pub was a "perfect fit" for the company's non-branded venues.

He said: "We are investing in the pub to ensure that it becomes a destination for people from many miles around including the surrounding towns of Daventry, Rugby and Northampton, offering well-kept real ale, food of the highest quality, and excellent value for both local trade and visitors from farther afield."

The restaurant has also been completely refurbished, while the bars and six letting bedrooms have been refitted. Improvements have been made to the gardens and a new car park built.
