A joint £430,000 investment by Fine & Country Inns (F&C) and Star Pubs & Bars will see the reopening of a traditional Rotherham pub.

The Masons Arms, in Thorpe Hesley, South Yorkshire, is F&C's eighth venue overall and the company’s second pub venture with Star.

The redevelopment will see the addition of an alfresco area and redecoration of the pub’s interior to blend contemporary and traditional elements.

External renovations include new signs and soft lighting for the outside space with seating for about 100 customers. Three heated beach huts will also provide phone chargers for customers.

Tribute to its long history

Inside, the pub will pay tribute to its long history, with the Wentworth and Thorpe Hesley rooms decorated to highlight the site’s important role in the village community.

The Masons Arms aims to focus on high-quality food, with kitchen renovations enabling the provision of traditional and modern dishes. The pub also serves afternoon coffees, teas and cakes.

F&C chief executive Gary Hunt said: “We have no upper limit or barrier to growth, we are simply considering every opportunity on its merits.

"While leaseholds have allowed us to expand more quickly, we are now looking for both leasehold and freehold venues because freeholds will create long-term investment value in the group.

"We are also currently working on an amazing six-bedroom boutique hotel with a fine-dining restaurant and a trendy bistro wine bar so this will open up opportunities for us in the hotel sector."

Phenomenal vision

Hunt added: “It is great to be building a relationship with Star – both of us are investing large amounts of money to create great venues for people to enjoy.”

Star Pubs & Bars operations director for the north Mick Howard said: “Fine and Country Inns has superb pub and business operators of the highest of standards. Their attention to detail and vision is phenomenal, and we are delighted to be working with them.”
