The words ‘beer’ and ‘cocktail’ are seldom found in the same sentence, but with a move away from sweet cocktails, inventive bartenders are turning to beer to jazz up their concoctions.

Here are six of the best beer cocktails we’ve come across:

1. Michelada

  • 15 ml Lime
  • 3 dashes of tabasco
  • 10ml Worcester sauce
  • Top with beer (almost any beer works)

Basically a Bloody Mary that substitutes the vodka for beer the Michelada is hugely versatile cocktail.

Almost any light beer can be used to experiment and see what works best for you and your customers.

Irish_Cream_Bomb

2. Irish Cream Bomb

  • 12.5 ml Irish Cream liquor
  • 12.5 ml Irish Whiskey
  • ½ Pint of stout

Layer the whiskey on top of the cream liquor in a shot glass, and then drop into a half pint of stout.

Infamous in America under the name “car bomb” this cocktail has been renamed to stop us missing out. Regardless of the contentious name, the Cream Bomb is a hugely popular drink with a lot of potential.

Dropping a shot of Irish Cream and whiskey into a half glass of stout, the Cream bomb is a nice alternative to the jagerbomb.

Beer-margarita

3: Lagerita

  • 25 ml Tequila
  • 25 ml Triple Sec
  • 25 ml Lime Juice
  • Top with Mexican beer

Shake the Tequila, Triple Sec and Lime then strain into a hi-ball glass with a salt rim. Add the beer and a lime wheel to garnish.

A simple combination of Mexican beer and the classic Margarita cocktail, this instant favourite blends together two great Mexican flavours.

Perfect for hot summer days on the beach, when you want a long drink but with a kick.

4. Boilermaker

  • 25ml bourbon
  • ½ pint of lager

Stir the bourbon into the beer, or alternatively drop in a shot glass for a ‘bomb’ style drink.

A great drink that can be drunk long, or as a bomb. Lager and bourbon matching sessions can be fun to see which whisky’s go with which lagers. Peroni and Buffalo trace is a personal favourite.

5. Black Velvet

  • 60 ml Prosecco/champagne
  • 60 ml Stout

Pour the sparkling into a flute glass then pour the stout in over the back of a spoon to layer it on top.

A simple but remarkably elegant drink, the Black Velvet adds a touch of sophistication to stout that’s usually lacking.

A great introduction to the beer cocktail category for non-beer drinkers, this drink also benefits from being incredibly simple to make.

6.Alcoholic Root Beer

  • 25 ml Galliano
  • 25 ml Kahlua
  • Top with beer

Add the Galliano and Kahlua to a mug glass and top with a beer of your choice while swirling to mix.

An inventive mix of liquors and beer to give a uniquely flavoursome combination, this is the dark horse of beer cocktails.

Best served with a pilsner to maximise the flavours, make sure you leave a big head on the beer to get the most out of the mix of beer, coffee and herbal flavours.
