Joshua Tetley brewery: set to close
Carlsberg is set to close its Leeds brewery, which has produced Tetley since 1822, in 2011 with the loss of 170 jobs — it blames the challenging market conditions and falling consumption.

Carlsberg is to close the Joshua Tetley brewery in Leeds in 2011 with the loss of 170 jobs.

The Danish brewer blamed the challenging market conditions resulting from higher duties, input inflation and regulatory pressure for the proposed closure.

It has begun consultation with 170 staff and will seek to redeploy staff within the business, possibly at its Northampton brewery.

"We are announcing the closure proposal more than two years in advance so that our employees are able to prepare for the future," said Carlsberg UK supply chain director Nick Webb

"We have to consider difficult decisions to remain competitive in the current environment and we regret the risk to the jobs of our employees.

"Although the business has remained robust in tough market conditions, this proposed move is vital to ensure Carlsberg UK remains a strong and sustainable business in the future. Throughout the transition, customers will continue to enjoy the usual high level of service from the company."

UK is worst market for Carlsberg.
