A city-centre bar has come under fire from police for selling shots of alcohol for only 25p.

The Sumo bar, in Leicester, holds a Monday-night promotion, where the price of a shot drops from £1.70 to 25p during three 12-minute periods in the evening. The bar says the promotion, called "The Exchange", is modelled on the stock market's price rise and fall.

Health workers, the Home Office and police have condemned the promotion, which they believe could add to the drink-fuelled violence already plaguing Leicester city centre.

A police spokesman said: "We think this is irresponsible and could encourage binge drinking."

Other Leicester bars have agreed with the police that alcohol prices will not fall below £1.

Sumo owner Jas Sodhi explain-ed that customers are only allow-ed to buy one double at a time when the price falls. He added: "I am a responsible licensee and there have been zero problems since we began the promotion."

He stressed that anyone who was clearly drunk or under-age would not be served.
