Pasqua wines launches two organic serves

Cascina.San.Vincenzo.Amarone.and.Ripasso

Family-owned Italian wine estate Pasqua Vigneti a Cantine has announced the launch of its first organic wines.

The two new serves, single vineyard expressions of the region's iconic Amarone and Ripasso wines, represent a significant step by the premium Veneto region winery in its commitment to sustainable viticulture production, a sustainable cultivation project the estate has been developing since 2016.

Pasqua CEO Riccardo Pasqua said: "Exploring and establishing sustainable viticulture and production practices that respect the environment and enhance the wines is of paramount importance to us at Pasqua.

“After 12 years we are thrilled to be launching our first 100% certified organic wines in the UK, marking a significant step forward with our vision and commitment to sustainability."

Offering aromas of Morello cherries, tobacco, leather, and dark chocolate with vanilla on the nose with a fresh acidity finish, the Amarone della Valpolicella Cascina San Vincenzo 2017 expression (15.5% ABV), has been made using hand-harvested grapes, dried for three months to lose 15-30% of weight, and concentrating the wines flavours, before being transferred to French oak barrels for 18-20 months of ageing post fermentation.

The second variant, Valpolicella Ripasso Cascina San Vincenzo 2019 (13.5% ABV) consists of a blend of organically grown 60% Corvina, 30% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella, with the wine placed in steel tanks and left on the skins after its initial fermentation before being decanted to barriques and tonneaux for nine months prior to bottling, offering floral and vanilla notes alongside red fruits and herbs.

Pasqua’s newest serves join its award-winning portfolio of wines from vineyards and grape growers across the Veneto region, including their Pasqua’s Mai Dire Mai Amarone 2012, which was awarded 96 points in Decanter Best Wines of 2021.

Both wines are available from the Society of Vintners and Jeroboams at RRP £24 for Valpolicella Ripasso and £55 for Amarone della Valpolicella.

Independent London craft brewery Anspach & Hobday has partnered with Maldon Salt to create Sea Salt & Lime Gose in celebration of the salt companies 140th anniversary.

The Sea Salt & Lime Gose offer a vibrantly tart and fresh Gose infused with lime zest, lime juice and Maldon’s finest sea salt, hopped with Loral and brewed using Philly Sour yeast, resulting in a fruity and refreshing 3.5% ABV beer.

Maldon Salt innovation manager Simon James said: “We are delighted to have our sea salt flakes in this Lime Gose to add another level of freshness alongside the bright citrus fruits and floral American Hops.

“In addition to this fantastic beer, we have filmed a companion episode of Salt Stories, with some great behind the scenes footage of the brew day.”

The collaborative brew is available to the on-trade now directly from Anspach & Hobday by contacting sales@anspachandhobday.com.

Anspach co-founder and head of production Paul Anspach said: “We have always enjoyed using salt in beer - whether in styles where you would typically expect it such as Goses, or in experimental and progressive styles such as chilli and chocolate Stouts.

“As well as adding salinity, salt can really enhance the other flavours of a beer, as indeed it does when used in food.

“When one thinks of high-quality sea salt only one name comes to mind, and the Maldon salt used in this beer really helps the sharp, citrusy notes of the lime to punch through.”

Amarula Gin wins gold ahead of official launch

Collage Maker-28-Jul-2022-04.40-PM

Amarula African Gin from Distell International, the makers of Amarula Cream Liqueur, has been awarded gold at the global Spirits Business Gin Masters Awards ahead of its official launch in August.

The refreshing and handcrafted gin boasts juniper notes, aromatic orange blossom, subtle spicy grains, and the sweet and tart flavours of Marula, a fruit similar to plums in aesthetics and favoured by elephants.

Each year, when Marula fruit is in season, the elephants play a vital role in alerting the local communities to the arrival of harvest time in sub-Saharan Africa, the only place where Marula trees grow.

Every stage of development honours the distinctive flavour of the Marula; the fruits are collected by hand, harvested, washed, destoned, pulped and cooled before being distilled into marula fruit spirit.

Amarula global brand lead Charmelle Conning said: “There could not be a better way to kick off the European launch of Amarula African Gin than with the recognition of a Gold Award from the highly regarded Spirits Business Gin Masters.

“We’re excited to encourage gin drinkers to taste something for the first time and try our refreshingly unique spirit as one of the characteristics of gin drinkers is adding to their repertoire and experiencing new flavours.

“We’re confident gin drinkers will soon understand why Elephants make their annual pilgrimage to enjoy the fruits of the Marula harvest.”

Furthermore, £1 per litre of Amarula African Gin sold has been pledged to be donated to Amarula Trust to support Elephant Conservation, empowering people and strengthening communities.

Amarula African Gin is 43% ABV and will be available via Amazon from Mid-August at £28 for 700ml.

Collage Maker-29-Jul-2022-09.31-AM

Closing this week's round up, though not strictly a new drinks product, is a new bottle format from Greenall's Gin.

The renowned Gin company has announced the launch of its new fully recyclable paper bottles (70cl), made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food grade pouch to contain the gin.

In comparison to standard glass bottles, the new style has a carbon footprint of 91.9kg/CO2e per bottle compared to 558.2kg/CO2e, a reduction of up to 84%.

Furthermore, as part of its Greener Greenall’s campaign, the brand has teamed up with climate action organisation, Ecologi, pledging for  every 10 Greenall’s gin & tonics purchased in the on-trade, one tree will be planted in areas of the world in most need.

Greenall's global brand lead Russell Smith said: “With climate change a continued growing threat, we recognise that we need to do our best to reduce our environmental footprint.

"This new paper bottle and partnership with Ecologi marks a significant step in Greenall’s sustainability journey. We know there is much more we need to do, so we are creating a roadmap for the brand that will lead us to reduce our carbon emissions to net zero.”
