Charles Dickens’ favourite cocktail is among the inspiration behind a new range of cordials for gin, launched by the Sipsmith team.

Three variants have been launched: The Original, The Gimlet and The Bishop.

“They have been produced using traditional methods that reflect Sipsmith’s handcrafted values and London heritage,” explained the distillery’s Jared Brown.

“Full of fruit and flavour they are as close as you can get to how they would have tasted in the late 1800s, with a creative twist,”

Each of the cordials has been inspired by an original cocktail, such as Charles Dickens’ favourite cocktail The Good Bishop, on which The Bishop cordial is based, while The Original cordial is based in the first documented British cocktail.

Each of the cordials has two serving suggestions: a long fizz and a shorter Martini glass serve. The recipes include:

The Original:

  • Fizz: 25ml Original Cordial, 25ml London Dry gin, topped with Soda in a highball filled with ice, garnished with a wedge of squeezed or unsqueezed orange.
  • Terrington’s Original Gin Cocktail: 20ml Original Cordial, 50ml Sipsmith London Dry gin, stirred over ice and double strained into a coupe and garnished with a twist.

The Gimlet:

  • Fizz: 25ml Gimlet Cordial, 25ml VJOP, topped with Soda in a highball filled with ice, garnished with a wedge of lime.
  • Gimlet: 20ml Gimlet Cordial, 50ml Sipsmith London Dry gin, stirred over ice and double strained into a coupe.

The Bishop:

  • Fizz option: 25ml Bishop Cordial, 25ml Sipsmith London Dry gin, topped with Soda in a highball filled with ice, garnished with a wedge of lime.
  • Short Bishop: 20ml Bishop Cordial, 50ml Sipsmith London Dry gin, (10ml Port  optional) stirred over ice and double strained into a coupe. No need for a garnish, if you want the colour of an orange twist do it just for aesthetics.

Back in July the craft distiller launched a "sipping vodka," especially for martinis.
