Greene King has appointed Reading Borough Council as its single point of contact for consultation with all councils on health and safety issues for its pubs.

The primary authority partnership (PAP) means Greene King will no longer have to deal with a series of local authorities in the areas where it has outlets.

The council will inform other authorities of inspection plans and give guidelines to them regarding the way the business ought to be inspected in order to minimise unnecessary checks.

Greene King said that, with more than 400 local authorities in England and Wales, “at times this meant advice given and the enforcement of regulatory powers was inconsistent and there was a duplication of processes the company went through”.

Once a review of the health and safety procedures is complete, food safety, trading standards and licensing will be added to the PAP.

Greene King’s group head of business risk Mike Gore said: “This is a great step forward for us when dealing with local authorities.”
