PoundPub, the no-frills pub concept, is to open its fifth site in Leek, Staffordshire, M&C understands.

Founder Mike Wardell told M&C he was converting another site from his wider Here For You Hospitality business, with the re-brand set to be complete next Monday.

He said: “We had been toying with the idea for a while. It’s a good pub but suffering a bit and will benefit from being re-branded as a PoundPub.”

Wardell said there are a further five pubs in the non-branded estate but it was unlikely any more would be converted.

However, he said the two sides of his estate could happily exist side by side, in some cases literally so. He said: “We have a PoundPub next to another of our sites in Newark (Notts) and even though the PoundPub is offering drinks at pretty much half the price of the other pub, we haven’t really seen it impact on sales.

"If anything PoundPub bringing customers out earlier rather than buying beer from the supermarket to drink before they go out.”

He said the focus for growth was now on a twin track of franchised and managed sites and said he was in discussion with a number of people who were “very serious about getting involved with the brand”.
