Pub customers have been shocked by the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old landlady in a small West Wales community. Devastated residents of Llangadog were still trying to come to terms with the death of Caroline Evans, who ran the Red Lion with her father, David. The licensee, who was five months pregnant, was apparently gunned down by father-of-three, 59-year-old William Davies, who walked into the pub last Thursday, and shot Evans before turning the gun on himself. It fulfilled a threat made to her last year by the farmer who had said he would take both their lives. Davies had appeared before magistrates last November and had admitted assault, threatening behaviour and possessing a shotgun without a certificate. The court heard that he had threatened and slapped Evans during an argument. Magistrates heard he was suffering from a severe depressive illness and was ordered to complete 60 hours community work, receive psychiatric treatment and put under a 24-month supervision order. A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys Police said following an examination of the scene and post-mortems, police were satisfied that no-one else was involved. He said Davies had not been the authorised holder of a firearm and as part of the inquiry police were investigating a possible burglary relating to a firearm. The incident took place last Thursday shortly before 6pm. The pub was sealed off while forensic examinations were carried out. David Evans, a retired vet, bought the pub five years ago and ran it with his daughter. His wife died two years ago.
