Brake donation aids LV School
A new sixth-form block at the Licensed Victuallers' School in Ascot has opened, thanks to a £500,000 donation from the founders of the Brake Brothers frozen food firm. The donation, funded by the Brake Family Trust, paid tribute to the fact that all four Brake brothers William, Frank, Paul and Peter once attended the Licensed Victuallers' School in Slough. The appeal launched at the beginning of 2003, the school's bicentenary year reached its target of raising £3m in time for the 2004/2005 school term. In total £2,800 was donated from past school pupils, companies and present parents, with the rest taken from school funds. The Brake Brothers Bicenten-nial building was opened by the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Robert Finch and the Lady Mayoress. Also in attendance were Mr and Mrs William Brake, together with other patrons, including Sodexho, Scottish Courage and the Worshipful Company of Innholders. The building designed by Frank Shaw Associates Ltd comprises study areas and a café for the sixth formers, and a state-of-the-art library to be used by the entire school. The school, originally set up as a facility for children of the licensed trade, offers a 10% discount on school fees to licensed retailers. Ian Mullins, headteacher of the Licensed Victuallers' School, said: "Without the generosity of the benefactors here today the students would not have access to the superb facilities available in this building." On unveiling the plaque, the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of London, said: "The facilities here in this building are very impressive and a further tangible demonstration of the commitment to education evident throughout the Licensed Victuallers' School.
