The search has begun to find the UK’s best licensee with the launch of the BII Licensee of the Year Award.

Established back in 1985, the awards are designed to recognise those who demonstrate outstanding achievement, effort and passion whilst working within the pub industry.

This year’s winners were Ashley & Kelly McCarthy from Ye Old Sun Inn, Colton, who were crowned after passing through four challenging rounds of judging which included a pub visit from the lead judges and facing a nine-strong panel of industry experts who questioned every aspect of their business in detail.

Judges will be looking for:

  • A clear demonstration of the highest levels of business acumen
  • A clear commitment to staff development
  • A passion for the licensed trade and the ability to speak knowledgeably about industry issues
  • Stand-out ability to be a fitting ambassador for the industry

Outstanding

Tim Hulme, BII chief executive, said: “Make no mistake, if you claim the title of BII Licensee of the Year, you really are the best of the best.

“The industry is full of dedicated, knowledgeable and hard working individuals and it is the job of the judging panel to decide who has that edge. No stone is left unturned in their pursuit of the winning candidate, or candidates as we saw last year with the outstanding husband and wife team, Kelly and Ashley McCarthy.”

The winner will be revealed at the BII Annual Lunch, which takes place at London's Grosvenor House Hotel in May 2014.

To enter licensees should visit the BII website and complete the first stage entry online. If they are successful in stage one, stage two entry forms will be sent to them.
