Did you show the Live 8 concert in your pub on Saturday?
Mike Fallon
The Wheatsheaf, Barrow-in-Furness
'We put it on at about 8pm but it didn't bring in much trade. Quite a lot of regulars were absent and probably decided to watch it at home. Some of our younger customers didn't know many of the bands and the whole thing didn't really grab the attention of that many. There was more interest in the Saturday afternoon horse-racing which is a bit of a religion here.

'We discussed whether to put the concert on but in the end decided against it as we thought most people would watch it at home anyway. We are very busy with food, particularly on Saturday nights, so we didn't want to annoy our dining customers. We're not really a TV pub and only tend to screen the really big sporting events. I think Live 8 was really for the take-home curry brigade.

'We screened the concert later in the evening but there wasn't that much interest shown. I don't think it was a pub viewing event because it was live and the soundtrack tended to suffer. There was also a lot of stopping and starting. It was a big day of sport and that tended to detract from the event. But I'm sure some of the dedicated music pubs would have had a more successful time.

'You can't criticise Bob Geldof for raising awareness of Africa's problems but there was not that much interest in the concert in the pub. I think we only had one request from a customer to put the concert on but continuous music in this form tends to distract customers especially if you have a jukebox anyway. Here, the TV is generally used for big sporting events.
