With scientists at CERN in Switzerland aiming to recreate the Big Bang today, pubs can start thinking about filling the black hole in customers' diaries with events to mark British Sausage Week.

The event runs this year from Monday November 3 until Sunday November 9. It coincides with Bonfire Night, an occasion where sausages make an ideal centrepiece for pub menus.

Organised by the British Sausage Appreciation Society, one of the aims of Sausage Week is to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Gravy and sauce specialist Essential Cuisine is pledging £1 to the charity for every tub of its No1 Beef Gravy sold in the week running up to the celebration and the week itself.

Nigel Crane, managing director of Essential Cuisine, said: "British Sausage Week is particularly great for recognising independent butchers and the expertise that goes into creating this fine British concept, and we hope to raise more than £1,000."

In time for Sausage Week, the winner of the Best Pub Sausage 2008 award will be announced on Friday, October 24. Part of the BPEX Foodservice Sausage of the Year Awards, the award is run in association with The Publican. It has attracted entries from pubs and specialist butchers across Britain.

BPEX also has Sausage Week POS available for pubs, which can be ordered through its website using the link on the right.
