Pubs in parts of rural Wales can now apply for grants of up to £10,000 to help them diversify.

Pub is the Hub, the Prince Charles-backed regeneration scheme for country pubs, has been launched in Wales for the first time. A pilot of the scheme is to run in Denbighshire by rural development agency Cadwyn Clwyd.

It's part of a three-year £175,000 project as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Development Plan, with money from Europe.

Under the scheme, eligible pubs in the county can get grants of up to 75% of the total cost of a specific regeneration project. The maximum available is £10,000. Projects could include post offices or shops.

Licensees will also benefit from the advice of a specialist pub advisor to help them through the service.

Former Thwaites director Malcolm Harrison, Pub is the Hub project leader for the scheme, said: "This can breathe new life into a village and can be incredibly rewarding for licensees."
