As hospitality aims to reach net zero by 2040 (including its supply chain), the first step for all venues is understanding their carbon footprint and how they can start to reduce it.

Production and consumption of food accounts for around 35% of total UK emissions, so the challenge to the industry is to act fast and make the biggest possible impact, through venues and supply chains.

The Hospitality Carbon Calculator and toolkit, powered by Sky Zero and supported by UKHospitality, the BII and the BBPA, has been built by the Zero Carbon Forum and is designed specifically for the industry.

There’s so much variety across hospitality, but the calculator ensures information is specific to each business whether that’s a pub, brewer, hotel, restaurant, QSR, contract caterer or late-night venue, making sure it’s as relevant as possible.

Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality:

Hospitality is fully committed to becoming more sustainable and reaching our net zero goal by 2040. We’re pleased to have pioneered the launch of the carbon calculator with Zero Carbon Forum and Sky Zero and it’s brilliant to have so many businesses use it to great effect. I would encourage everyone in the sector to use the calculator to support the positive changes everyone is continuing to make to the ways they operate.

Since its launch in 2022, over 500 operators, with 6,000 sites and 90,000 employees have used the Hospitality Carbon Calculator to measure over 1.7m tonnes of carbon in the mission to reduce to their carbon footprint.

Joe Buckley, BII Licensee of the Year 2023, has utilised the Hospitality Carbon Calculator at his pub, the Tollemache Arms in Harrington: “The calculator was quick, easy to use, and helped us understand our carbon emissions and what actions to take.

Multi-site businesses can also use the calculator across their estate, Isabelle Masters, Climate Lead at Robinsons Brewery has been supporting their pubs to get involved; “The Hospitality Carbon Calculator and Toolkit has helped our publicans easily measure their footprint and understand how to cut carbon and costs. The visibility of our company emissions has also helped target investments on our path to net zero.”

Emma McClarkin, CEO of BBPA

Britain’s brewing and pub sector are amongst the oldest and most revered around the world. We are committed to maintaining this reputation and it is now more important than ever for us to brew world class beer and operate in an innovative and sustainable way. We are excited to support this calculator and toolkit which will help our breweries and pubs deliver our carbon zero future as part of the wider, green recovery.

The Hospitality Carbon Calculator and the toolkit which runs alongside it, enables hospitality operators to quickly calculate their carbon footprint and identify achievable actions to reduce emissions, many of them low and no cost.

The Calculator is incredibly user-friendly, designed for busy operators with little technical or sustainability know-how and empowers businesses of all sizes, across the industry, be part of the movement to reducing carbon emissions.

Steve Alton, CEO of BII

Our members recognise the huge importance of building a sustainable future, with many already having made positive changes in their businesses, this additional support will help them to further evolve their approach.

The Hospitality Carbon Calculator and the toolkit can be accessed online completely free of charge and after sign-up, some straightforward questions are asked about sales and goods purchased using a simple online form. This creates a visual overview of where the business’ impact is coming from, and how it compares to the rest of the industry. A tailored pdf toolkit is then provided to help identify and implement reduction actions.

Sky Business managing director Damian Saunders said: “At Sky, we’re committed to building a low carbon economy and inspiring positive change for the planet.

"Everyone has a role to play in this transition, which is why we’re delighted to have supported the development of the Hospitality Carbon Calculator and toolkit to help the hospitality sector decarbonise together at pace and help our customers kick-start their journey too.”
