Unique Pub Company's licensees are benefiting from increased profits and reduced banking charges after installing cash machines in their pubs.

Publicans have found that the new service is popular with customers, because it is safer and easier for regulars than taking a trip into town.

David Kilcoyne of the Chestnut Tree, Coventry, is one of the licensees who has has recently had a machine installed.

He said: "We are doing around 130 transactions a week, mainly from students in the area that use the pub. It's much safer for them to use our ATM because in Coventry there is a risk of being mugged using the high street machines and it's great for business because they stay and spend their money with us."

Licensees can also fill the machines from their tills - removing the need for bank runs which can leave them vulnerable to attack by thieves.

Mr Kilcoyne added: "We fill the machine from our own takings and it is credited to our bank account. This means we're holding less cash on the premises and are not paying bank charges for depositing our money, which saves us about £30 per week. There's also the time saving of not having to go down to the bank every week with thousands of pounds."

The benefits of installing a cash machine include:

  • Saving money on cash banking
  • Making fewer trips to the bank so licensee is less exposed to theft
  • Saving on visa charges and on cash-back charges
  • Keeping customers in the pub
  • Increased pub takings
