A memorial service is to be held for Christopher Pope, the former chairman of Dorset pub retailer Eldridge Pope, at Sherbourne Abbey in Dorset on Tuesday 11 May at 2.30pm. Christopher Pope, who died from cancer last month aged 67, joined the family firm as an apprentice in 1957 and helped the company brew Britain's first lager. He became director of the company in 1962, then chairman in 1982, a posthe held until last year when ill-health forced him tostand down. Brown Ale battle Scottish Courage has called in lawyers to help save the protected mark of origin on Newcastle Brown Ale. The company hopes to keep the brand's Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status despite announcing plans last week to close the Tyneside Brewery where it is brewed. Communications manager David Jones said the company is consulting with lawyers to alter the wording of the PGI to keep the status intact.
