Potatoes fit to eat
Farmers are campaigning to ban the phrase 'couch potato from the Oxford Dictionary claiming the term undermines the health benefits potatoes offer. More than 30 potato farmers staged a protest in London claiming the phrase misrepresents what is an inherently healthy food. The British Potato Council says 'couch potato is defined as a person who takes little exercise and watches a surfeit of television. 'In reality, potatoes are a low-fat energy source and excellent source of Vitamin C, which are all essential for a healthy diet, said BPC marketing manager Kathryn Race.
Seafood challenge winner
Executive chef of the Cumberland Hotel, London, Eugene Cartwright, has won this year's Norwegian Seafood Recipe Challenge. His dish comprised crispy Norwegian cod, confit fennel haddock and prawn tortellini with a light Thai shell jus. The judging panel at the event, held at London's Great Eastern Hotel, was headed by David Mulcahy from the Craft Guild of Chefs.
Summertime specials
A summer-long package of specials and promotional offers to help caterers capitalise on the seasonal eating-out experience has been launched by Booker. They will run until 8 September and provide major savings to customers on a variety of summer favourites. Booker said the offers were designed to help reduce costs and increase profits in a season which traditionally saw an increase in dining out. Offers include a two-for-one £10.99 deal on Peak Fayre Quarter Pounder Burgers and similar offer on £4.29 pork and beef sausages.
