Family focus: Feeding the brood

Greene King has revamped the menu at Hungry Horse, its chain of 90 destination food pubs across the country, to further increase the brand's family appeal.

Hungry Horse, which won the Retail Brand of the Year title at The Publican's Pub Food Awards in 2004, has added seasonal dishes such as Ruddles beef and ale pie and American pancakes with black cherry sauce, alongside lighter bites and healthier options.

These include dishes, such as salmon with new potatoes and low-fat vanilla frozen yoghurt, with a particular appeal to female diners.The new menu also allows kids to create their own meal combinations, choosing from a range of mains and sides to suit all tastes. Kids' menu items are marked with a coloured horseshoe, indicating levels of saturated fat, sugar and salt.

The horseshoe coding system is designed to help choose a mix of menu items from healthier options to more indulgent treats. Starters such as juicy corn on the cob or fresh fruit for dessert are intended to provide a healthier option for younger diners.

There is a range of deals that can be used to drive trade as required, including 'kids eat free', 'two meals for £8 Monday to Friday' and 'steak or salmon for £4.99 on Tuesdays'. These sit alongside weekly offers including a curry club, a 'golden years' menu and Sunday roast specials.
