In a surprise move Magners cider producer C&C Group has appointed former Scottish & Newcastle boss John Dunsmore as its chief executive.

Dunsmore replaces Maurice Pratt, who announced his resignation as CEO last month.

Speculation as to Dunsmore's next move has followed him around since Dutch brewer Heineken bought the UK's largest beer producer earlier this year. At one point it was suggested he might take over the helm at managed pub operator Mitchells & Butlers.

Dunsmore is joined by former S&N colleague Stephen Glancey as chief operating officer. Both executives join the C&C board with immediate effect. C&C has also announced the appointment of Kenny Neison, who also worked at S&N, as strategy director.

The appointment of the trio is a boost for C&C, whose fortunes have flagged as the downturn in the drinks sector has hit sales of Magners.

The cider maker last month announced half year sales down more than 13 per cent and issued a profit warning for the second half.

C&C said the remuneration package of the three appointees will include a high element of share-based incentive.

Tony O'Brien, C&C's chairman, said: "The calibre of these appointments represents a major achievement for C&C and presents the group with a unique opportunity to address decisively the challenges it faces.

"John and his colleagues will bring a renewed impetus and momentum to the group through fresh and innovative thinking, backed up by a wealth of experience in the international drinks industry, and a track record of building shareholder value."
