The first in a series of 10 government-run consultation events on the controversial mandatory code of practice kicks-off today (Tuesday) in Newcastle.

Over the next six weeks, the events will give licensees the chance to have their say on the code, designed to crackdown on irresponsible promotions and operators.

Each consultation event will include workshops for licensees and off- licence managers as well as health organisations, councils and police forces.

The code is being opposed by trade groups, on the basis it is unnecessary and will also unfairly affect responsible licensees. Other measures could see pubs being forced to offer a 125ml measure of wine and free tap water.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell reiterated that the government does not want to "penalise the majority of responsible businesses".

He added: "This series of regional consultation events will help us ensure the proposed mandatory code achieves that goal through some full and frank discussions with those people who work in and deal with the alcohol trade and most importantly the general public.

"We have consulted with the alcohol industry at a national level about the code and we now want to hear from licensees at a local level so I would encourage them to register for these events."

The consultation events take place at; Newcastle - today; Hull - July 9; Liverpool - July 14; Nottingham - July 16; Birmingham - July 21; Fenlands - July 23; Portsmouth - July 28; Cardiff - July 30; Weymouth - August 4; and London - August 6.

Attendance is by invite only.
