Three people have been arrested after raids on 12 pubs and "several" private addresses — in the 'biggest crackdown yet' on foreign satellite football.

Over £70,000 of cash plus computer equipment, documentation, tobacco and drugs were seized in the operation in Humberside yesterday morning.

Three men have been taken into custody. A man aged 43 has been arrested for drugs offences and obstructing police officers.

A man aged 53 and a man aged 20 were both arrested for money laundering and breach of copyright.

All three men have been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

In addition, police in Oldham used a warrant to seize broadcasting equipment, which had allegedly been used for foreign satellite broadcasts into 12 pubs in and around the Hull area.

Over 70 officers were involved in the multi-agency operation. It included officers representing Media Protection Services, which investigates foreign satellite screenings, and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), which seized over 400 bottles of wine and a small amount of tobacco.

Complaints

A statement from Humberside Police said: "This action has come about as a result of a number of complaints from local licensees who have had to purchase licensed viewing agreements from B Sky B, which can cost up £12,000 per annum, to show matches.

"Warning letters were sent to the licensees of a number of public houses about the alleged illegal broadcast of premiership football matches.

"Searches have been conducted at a number of public houses which have allegedly continued to show the football matches illegally.

"All of the allegedly illegal broadcasting equipment has been taken from the public houses and private prosecutions will be conducted by Media Protection Services Limited on behalf of the Football League."

Biggest crackdown

MPS managing director Ray Hoskin said: "This is the biggest crackdown on this type of criminal activity and is in response to concerns of honest publicans whose trade is suffering through the minority who flout what is now clear law.

"We are receiving overwhelming success in the courts and this prompt and expert reaction by Humberside Police will be welcome news for the licensed trade, particularly in the Hull area."

Detective Inspector Michael Reed said: "This joint operation was conducted to provide reassurance to the law-abiding licensees in the city who have lost significant trade as a result of illegal criminal activity.

"This is organised crime and the profits made by those involved can be significant.

"We have worked closely with the Media Protection Services and Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs to disrupt such activity and deter others."
