Pubs are being encouraged to enter into a competition to find the nation’s best breakfast.

Returning for a second year, the Best Breakfast Awards are open to all venues that serve breakfast, including bars, pubs and restaurants.

With two categories to enter – hot and cold – the awards will take place to coincide with Breakfast Week, which runs from 25 to 31 January 2015.

The winner will be chosen by the public, who will be able to vote from 1 December through to 18 January.

Organiser HGCA said venues are able to enter right up until 18 January, but encouraged pubs to enter as early as possible to drum up customer support.

TV chef Phil Vickery will join HGCA during Breakfast Week to present a special award for the most unique or innovative dish.

Pub winners

Last year, the Bear Inn, in Brighton took the top prize in the pub category for its full English breakfast.

It beat off the ‘Friels Fry’, by Friels Bar & Restaurant, in Swatragh, Derry, Northern Ireland, into second, while the Crown in Darwen, Lancashire came third for its ‘Mega Breakfast’. All three dishes were hot.

Mexican restaurant the Tavern Company picked up the overall title.

Keith Gurney, from the restaurant, said: “We entered the Best Breakfast Awards after hearing about it on the local radio.

“It was a great way to get our valued customers to show their appreciation for our breakfast menu and we were delighted with the local support we had.

“We had some great media coverage after the event and we’ve now even extended our breakfast hours.”

Growing market

Karen Levy from organiser HGCA said: “Last year’s Best Breakfast Awards were a great success in highlighting the growing out-of-home market for breakfast.

“We are excited to be running the awards for a second year and look forward to receiving entries from even more venues this year.”

Breakfast Week aims to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of breakfast.

In addition to the awards, HGCA suggests pubs can also get involved by running competitions and promotions, highlighting local suppliers, holding tasting sessions and arranging events in the local community in celebration of the week.
