Corona Extra is waving "hasta luego" to its competitors in the UK following record sales.

Following on from its strong showing in The Publican Brands Report 2004 and a 110 per cent growth in UK sales in 2002-2003, the Mexican lager brand has notched up a sales rise of over 100 per cent for the first quarter of 2004.

Senior figures at Corona are now hopeful that overall sales for 2004 will be double that of 2003.

Angel Garcia-Gomez, head of Corona Extra in the UK, believes this strong performance is easily explained.

"Corona Extra is a unisex brand," he said. "Anyone can enjoy it at any time. It has so many opportunities in the UK market.

"We have managed this growth despite there being a static bottled lager market and the fact that the RTD market has reached its top level and is now in decline."

Corona Extra has also announced that it has secured sponsorship of the Suzuki Alastre team for the World Superbike Championship 2004, which will be screened on both Sky and BBC television.

Brewed by Grupo Mondial in Mexico City, Corona Extra is distributed in England and Wales by Bedford brewer Charles Wells, while Glasgow-based William Morton is responsible for Scottish distribution.

The brand is one of the world's best-selling Mexican beers and is the number one imported beer in the US. It is brewed at source and distributed across the world, rather than brewed under licence in other countries.
