Veteran pub chef Peggy has seen a few sights in her time, so it takes something pretty impressive to get her excited. Here's her choice of the latest products on the pub food market.

  • Garlic & Herb coated Wild Alaskan Salmon Goujons
    Supplier: Young's

We used to have a fish-tank in the saloon bar, but we had to take it out because the goldfish started getting a bit aggressive. We reckoned someone was topping up the tank with vodka. Anyway, speaking of wild sealife, Young's has launched a new recipe for its Garlic & Herb coated Wild Alaskan Salmon Goujons.

These make a lovely starter or main course, and go very well in a buffet. You can deep fry them in three or four minutes.I cooked a load up for Betty's daughter's hen do in the function room last week. Some of the guests got a bit excited later on, one of our barmen got cornered in the snug, but I don't think you can blame the buffet for that. He'll be fine once the swelling's gone down.

Anyway, the goujons now feature Marine Stewardship Council accredited prime fillets of wild Alaskan salmon, sourced only from well managed and sustainable fisheries. Maybe we should get one of those for the pub.

Prunes
Supplier: Whitworths

Our Edna swears by prunes, she reckons they've kept her alive for years after the doctors gave up on her. These are new, though - individually-wrapped fruit snacks, which Whitworths reckons will make it easier than ever for people to enjoy healthy fruit.

It would be hard to wean some of our regulars off pork scratchings, but these offer absolute portion control, freshness throughout the bag and are low on fat and high in fibre. The 125g packs of prunes even feature the 5 A Day logo, so they must be good for you.

Cherry tartlet
Supplier: Délifrance

We need to get a new dessert trolley. The wheel came off the last one and deposited a pavlova right in the lap of some bloke who had brought a girl from the office in for a meal. He'll have a have a hard time explaining that stain away.

And speaking of tarts, Délifrance has added cherry flavour to its tartlet range.

The Cherry tartlet is already a key seller in France, but we won't hold that against it. It's renowned for its authentic, rustic and homemade appearance. The individual butter shortcrust pastry is generously filled with Morello Cherries, French egg custard and cream, and can be defrosted and served or baked from frozen in 10 minutes.

The other flavours in the range include plum, rhubarb, apple and chocolate and vanilla. They'll definitely be going on the new trolley.

Microtuff plus cloths
Supplier: Vileda Professional

This place never stays clean. I reckon some of the customers bring in extra dust and leave it here.

I shall definitely be ordering some of these new Microtuff plus cloths from Vileda Professional. Microtuff plus is a warp knitted textile microfibre cloth, perfect for removing greasy fingermarks and stubborn dirt without the need for chemicals.

I like them because they've got a bit of substance to them. It's like using an old-fashioned cloth but with all the benefits of modern microfibres. And believe me, some of the things I have to clean up around here, you need a bit of elbow grease. They wouldn't treat their own homes like this...
