Hobsons Mild has been named Champion Beer of Britain at the Campaign for Real Ale's Great British Beer Festival.

The 3.2% abv beer is described by Hobsons as "a smooth dark mild". The

brewery also said that its "chocolate malt gives plenty of flavour and aroma which belies its strength."

The brewery, based in Shropshire, has been going since 1993 and produces around 100 barrels a week.

The silver award went to the Mighty Oak brewery in Essex for Maldon Gold, while Suffolk brewer Green Jack won bronze with its Ripper.

The full run-down of GBBF gold winners are:

Milds - Hobson's Mild (Cleobory Mortimer, Shropshire).

Bitters - Castle Rock Harvest Pale (Nottingham).

Best Bitters - Purple Moose Glaslyn Ale (Portmadog, Gwynedd).

Strong bitters - York Centurian's Ghost (North Yorkshire).

Speciality Beer - Nether-gate Umbel Magna (Sudbury, Suffolk).

Golden Ales - Mighty Oak Malson Gold (Maldon, Essex).

Hobsons Mild beat off competition from across Britain after impressing a judging panel that included MA editor Andrew Pring and MA beer writer Roger Protz.

The overall festival bronze winner, Green Jack Brewery's Ripper was already in the final after being entered in February at the National Winter Ales Festival after being crowned the Champion Winter Beer of Britain.
