Andy Wood, managing director, Adnams

Corporate goal for the year?

To continue to grow the Adnams brand. Adnams Spindrift allows us to put great tasting beer into places that can't usually serve cask beer. Our "Beer from the Coast" campaign continues to capture the imagination, and works through-the-line in pubs, at events and in advertising. The growth of Adnams retail will continue with the rollout of our Cellar & Kitchen stores.

Any opportunity to grow your business?

Yes. Growing the Adnams brand allows us to operate in new places. The investment in our infrastructure over the past few years allows us greater flexibility and opportunities to innovate. Recent new products, such as Yuletide, Spindrift and Innovation, allow us to enter territory not previously explored.

Adnams Cellar & Kitchen stores are well established in our heartland; our growth plan will take us further afield this year.

If there is a downturn in the economy, how bad is it going to get?

Consumer confidence is seriously dented. The first half of 2008 will be incredibly tough. However, in overall terms, our industry is fairly resilient. Consumers won't completely lose their appetite for going out, but are likely to become more selective.

Where's the light at the end of the tunnel?

As consumers (rightly) demand higher standards, premium brands such as Adnams are well placed to meet those demands.

If political pressure increases, what's our best form of defence?

Our industry needs to actively participate in the health and social-disorder debate. Denial will inevitably lead us to confrontation. By engaging directly with partners, we can work together to achieve the best results.

As an industry we must have a greater understanding of how, for many, alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation. But for others, how it can lead to a chaotic lifestyle and antisocial behaviour.

I am chairman of NORCAS, a regional drug and alcohol advice organisation that educates people on the impact of alcohol misuse. Adnams has worked with NORCAS for many years and we greatly value its input.

Biggest challenge your business faces?

Challenging market conditions.

Personal goal for the year?

To reduce my own carbon footprint and implement further carbon savings across the Adnams business.
