May is mild month for CAMRA
The Campaign for Real Ale is once again preparing for a month of campaigning in May to celebrate the mild beer style.
CAMRA will target consumers who have never tried mild beers, and look to encourage more licensees to participate in the campaign by serving a mild beer in May.
Mild beers tend to be of a low alcohol by volume, are usually dark in colour due to the use of well-roasted malts or barley, and are conventionally less hopped than bitters.
Once classified as "an endangered beer style", CAMRA said that mild beers are "becoming increasingly favoured by UK brewers".
In past years, a mild beer has won CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain competition (Rudgate Ruby Mild, Hobson's Mild), and Cotswold Spring's Old Sodbury Mild was recently named Supreme Champion Beer 2011 in a Society of Independent Brewers awards ceremony.
CAMRA branches in the past have organised successful events and initiatives such as mild crawls, pub passport schemes to champion local pubs serving mild beer, food and mild beer matching evenings, and meet the brewer sessions.
Major UK pub companies have supported the campaign in past years through introducing one-off brews in their pubs, hosting CAMRA's mild initiatives, and holding mild-related beer festivals.
